TRAVIS DAHER

Owner and President

Your landscape reflects more than just your personal style—it reveals the values cherished in your home. The effort you put into transforming your outdoor space speaks not only of your financial commitment but also of the comfort, security, and dignity you provide your family.

In the Phoenix landscaping industry, finding someone who respects your vision can feel like discovering a rare gem: a professional who understands that a yard is more than just a project to finish. Landscapers who approach their work with that mindset—treating each space with care and accountability—earn great client trust and endure the longest in the business.

That’s the visionary we feature in this interview. Meet Travis Daher, owner and president of Straight Line Landscape.

INTERVIEW WITH TRAVIS

Please tell us about your main responsibilities at Straight Line Landscape.

Travis: I lead the team and make sure every project meets our standards for quality. I’m hands-on with planning, scheduling, and tackling problems as they come up. I coordinate with clients and crews to keep things running smoothly. I make sure everything gets done right and on time.

What experience prepared you for a career in landscaping?

I got my start in landscaping as early as high school. I learned about irrigation installation while working for a cousin who was in that business. Then, I had summer jobs at a tree nursery and landscaping company.

After college, I moved to Phoenix and witnessed how fast the city was growing. With so many houses being built, I knew that services like landscape construction, tree and lawn maintenance, and rock installation would be in constant demand.

Nothing in particular prepared me for this job. It was a mix of things. I learned the landscaping basics from my summer jobs. Sports taught me leadership. And I’m fortunate to have a father who impressed on me the importance of integrity and quality work.

Awesome! How did your landscaping career start, and what inspired you to stick with it?

I once took a crew to my dad’s house, and we completed his front and side yards in 6 days. The neighbors kept praising me and started asking me to do theirs, too.

I once took a crew to my dad’s house, and we completed his front and side yards in 6 days. After we finished, neighbors told me, “You’re good at this!” and they started asking if we could do their homes. Their immense interest in our work made me realize that I could actually build a career in landscaping. After moving to Phoenix, with its 7 million residents, I thought there’d be endless opportunities to provide landscaping services to homes throughout the city.

What kept me in this business was the satisfaction of leading a team and delivering work we could be proud of. I know the technical side of landscaping, but I spend most of my time rallying my crews, keeping everyone safe, and getting projects completed efficiently.

How did Straight Line Landscape get started, and what motivated you to launch it?

I spent 8 years working for another Phoenix landscape contractor who measured success by how much was done in a day, not how well the job was done. That business collapsed during the housing market crash, even though the employees worked hard. The real problem was management. The crew did everything right, but they ended up paying the price.

Then, one of the crew came to me asking for work. That moment convinced me to start my own landscaping business. So, I gathered my own crew and told them we’d do things differently. We wouldn’t rush jobs or cut corners. We’d focus on building a reputation for quality instead of making a quick profit. Importantly, we’d treat employees fairly.

We launched Straight Line Landscape in 2010. I thought the Phoenix landscaping market had a gaping hole for companies committed to doing things right. The journey hasn’t been without obstacles, including the COVID pandemic, but we’ve stayed the course since then.

And look at the company now—it’s become unstoppable.

Yeah.

What do you think sets Straight Line Landscape apart from the competition?

What keeps us ahead is a combination of the principles and experiences that have guided us for years. The lessons help us stay committed to meeting clients’ expectations and taking care of the crews who make it all possible.

Please give us examples.

First, our in-house experience ensures every project is built with craftsmanship and durability. By handling most of the work ourselves, we use tried-and-true materials and practical designs that balance beauty and function.

Second, our team’s experience in desert landscaping and lessons learned over the years allow us to anticipate challenges and continuously improve.

Third, accountability drives everything we do. When a problem arises, we analyze it with the same people who completed the work, so mistakes become learning opportunities.

How do you support your team?

I’ve been a true advocate for everyone on my staff. Other landscaping companies have high employee turnover. Meanwhile, I have crew leaders who’ve been with me for over 20 years. Our more experienced crew members guide and train the newer guys, ensuring everyone grows their skills.

I make it a point to know each crew member’s abilities and character, then I familiarize myself with every homeowner and their project with the help of the landscape design team. This approach helps me match crews to each job, which keeps workflows frictionless and sets everyone up for success.

How do you choose your team members?

We run two sides of the business: the office team and the production crews. We rarely hire new people. Most of our managers worked their way up and have been here for years.

At the office, we have a small but dedicated team of six, coordinating with clients and designers, managing paperwork, and handling office communications.

On the production side, I’m fortunate to have 10 solid crew leaders and about 20 diligent crew members below them. Many of them grew up together, are friends or family, which naturally builds cohesion.

What’s a typical day like at the company?

Our crews start at staggered times, from sunrise to evening, to keep everything on schedule. They coordinate closely with early-morning deliveries and handle the many moving parts of each day’s logistics. I’m there to guide the team and ensure every task is done correctly and efficiently.

Why do you focus your work in North Phoenix, Arizona?

Concentrating on North Phoenix has many advantages.

One, it’s given us deep familiarity with this part of the city, which is a huge advantage over new players coming in. A Phoenix landscape contractor should have extensive knowledge of local soil conditions, ground characteristics, and weather changes, all of which impact an outdoor space’s functionality, ease of maintenance, and long-term value.

Two, there’s quality control. I personally oversee every project, and it’s much easier to manage multiple jobs when they’re close together. We’ve had opportunities to expand to Las Vegas and Tucson, but I believe spreading out too far would dilute the quality of our work.

Three, reliability and punctuality are also key advantages. When crews travel far, traffic and accidents can throw off the schedule.

What do clients think about that?

They’re pleased. Cost efficiency is important for homeowners. Long drives by our crews translate into paid hours that don’t go toward actual work.

Are there any tips you’d like to give to your clients?

The most important advice I can give is for homeowners to do their homework and understand what quality landscaping really looks like—it’s more than just lawn care, tree services, and curb appeal. They should hire a landscape contractor who truly knows Phoenix conditions.

Treat your outdoor space like you would your car.

Also, nothing lasts forever, but regular landscape maintenance goes a long way. I recommend routinely checking for outdoor lighting or irrigation system malfunctions, as well as watching for leaks, standing water, mold, or cracks. They should treat their outdoor space like they would their car.

How do you envision the next 5–10 years of the company?

That’s a tough one. But materials and labor are becoming more expensive and scarce, so efficiency and cost management will be critical for any Phoenix landscaping business. There’s a growing gap between quality and price in the industry, but Straight Line Landscape always focuses on quality over margins.

The industry will face challenges, and companies offering landscape services will need to return to basics: reliable partnerships, doing things right, and being honest with customers. For us, maintaining high quality, stability, and efficiency will remain the priority.

Lastly, do you think artificial intelligence has a place in landscaping?

Yes, AI can help with scheduling and quantity takeoffs for repetitive tasks. It can track equipment and plan logistics, but it can’t replace human judgment because every landscaping design has unique variables—soil, weather, deliveries, and homeowner changes. AI could assist with administrative tasks, but running the actual work on-site still requires experience and decision-making from knowledgeable people.

We appreciate your time, Travis! It’s clear you know this business inside and out.

Thanks!
